Rutba only audits and changes sites whose owner has proved control of them. This protects you and every other site owner.

Add the site

  1. Go to Sites and press Add site.
  2. Fill in:
    • Site address, for example example.com.
    • Site name, any name you will recognise.
    • Platform: WordPress, Custom code, Shopify or Other.
    • Site type: Blog / content site, Online store, Company / services, News site or Local business. Rutba adjusts the weight of each audit area to the type, for example structured data counts more for a store.
    • Main content language: the language of your pages. Explanations and AI suggestions for the site use it.
  3. Press Add site.

If you see You have reached the number of sites in your plan, remove a site you no longer need or move to a larger plan in Billing.

Verify ownership

Open the site. The Verify ownership section offers three methods. Use the one you can do most easily, then press Verify now.

HTML meta tag

Add the tag shown on the page inside the <head> of your homepage. It looks like this:

<meta name="rutba-site-verification" content="…" />

HTML file

Create a file with the exact name shown (it starts with rutba- and ends with .txt) in the root folder of your site, with the content shown. It must open at https://your-domain/that-file-name.

DNS TXT record

At your domain or DNS provider, add a TXT record with the value shown (rutba-site-verification=…) on the root domain or on _rutba.your-domain.

WordPress

Using WordPress? Connecting the plugin verifies ownership automatically: see Connect a WordPress site.

If verification fails

  • The verification meta tag was not found on your homepage. Check that the tag is on the homepage itself, not another page, and that a cache plugin or CDN is not serving an older copy. Clear the cache and try again.
  • The verification file was not found or its content does not match. Open the file in your browser: it must show the exact text, with nothing added.
  • The TXT record was not found yet. DNS changes can take up to a few hours. Try again later.

Keep the tag, file or record in place after verification.

What verification unlocks

Once the site is verified you receive a notification, the site tabs appear and you can run audits and apply fixes.
