Recovery safety net and the emergency link

If a change breaks your site, Rutba undoes it automatically. Keep a private emergency link to undo the last change even when WordPress admin will not open.

Every change Rutba makes to a WordPress site is reversible. For the rare case where a change stops the site from loading, there is a second safety layer that works outside WordPress.

How the safety net works

The connector installs a small recovery component that runs before other plugins. When Rutba updates a plugin or makes a larger change, it keeps a copy first. If WordPress then crashes, or Rutba does not confirm the site is healthy in time, the previous files are put back automatically.

The site page shows the status under Recovery safety net: Active or Not installed. The plugin downloaded from Rutba has it on by default. If you installed the plugin from WordPress.org, tick Enable emergency recovery in Settings → Rutba.

  1. Open the site in Rutba and press Create emergency link in the WordPress connector panel.
  2. Copy the Emergency recovery link and keep it somewhere safe and private, such as your password manager.

Anyone with the link can undo the last change, so do not share it. Creating a new link stops the old one from working.

When to use it

If your site or WordPress admin stops working right after a change:

  1. Open the emergency link in your browser.
  2. You will see Rutba: the last change was undone. Reload your site. Reload your site.
  3. If it says there is no pending change to undo, the problem was not caused by a Rutba change. Contact your host.

Other ways to undo

When the site works, use Change history in Rutba: open a change and press Roll back, or Undo today to roll back everything applied today, newest first. See Apply fixes safely and roll them back.
